Japan Earthquake-Asia-Pacific Tsunami

Posted on by

On Friday March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan. This has triggered 4 metre waves in Japan and tsunami warnings across the Pacific coastline. Thousands of people are reported dead, and many more are injured or missing. The earthquake has caused fires and severe damage to buildings, leaving thousands of households without electricity.

The Fukushima I, Fukushima II, Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant and Tōkai nuclear power stations, consisting of a total eleven reactors, were automatically shut down following the earthquake. Higashidōri, also on the northeast coast, was already shut down for a periodic inspection. Cooling is needed to remove decay heat after a reactor has been shut down, and to maintain spent fuel pools. The backup cooling process is powered by emergency diesel generators at the plants and at Rokkasho nuclear reprocessing plant.

At Fukushima I and II tsunami waves overtopped seawalls and destroyed diesel backup power systems, leading to severe problems at Fukushima I, including three large explosions and radioactive leakage. Over 200,000 people were evacuated.

The April 7 aftershock caused the loss of external power to Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant and Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant but backup generators were functional. Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant lost 3 of 4 external power lines and lost cooling function for as much as 80 minutes. A spill of a couple liters of radioactive water occurred at Onagawa.

EMI Music and Hikaru Utada agree new global recording deal

EMI Music is proud to announce that it has reached a new agreement with Hikaru Utada and her management office, u3music, for a new global recording contract.

Since EMI released Hikaru Utada’s debut single, ‘Automatic/Time Will Tell’, in 1998, sold 2 million copies, the singer-songwriter has become one of the most successful Japanese recording artists in the country’s history.

More than 9.9 million copies of her debut album ‘First Love’ were shipped domestically and abroad, still the most successful Japanese language album ever.

She has recorded five original albums and 21 singles. In particular, her single ‘Flavor of Life’ was downloaded more than 9 million times upon release, a world record at the time. Hikaru Utada has now sold in total over 50 million singles, albums and DVDs worldwide.

Outside of Japan, Hikaru Utada’s music has been released under the name ‘UTADA’. Going forward, her music activities in all countries and languages will now be united under one name, Hikaru Utada.

Roger Faxon, CEO, EMI Group: “We are very happy that EMI’s global network, expertise and passion will continue to contribute to and support the musical and creative vision of the superbly talented Hikaru Utada. “

Utada says do not buy her English Best Album

Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol.2″ is to be released on 24th November! It includes my singles released over the past 6 months, as well as the acoustic mix version of Beautiful World used in “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance,” plus my brand-new 5 songs! I put my energy into them after EMI and I decided the release this summer. I wanna take it to all of you as soon as possible.

Now, out of the clear blue sky I heard something called “Utada the best” was to be released from Universal, the company I worked for in English in the name of Utada. And you know what, they set exactly the same release date. It’s a “me-too” sales plan that hitches a ride on the release of Utada Hikaru’s “Single Collection Vol.2.”

The release of “Utada the best” is totally unrelated to my will. No new materials in it, it’s just a “commodity” with no hearts in it. It is me who is to be bashed, backbitten like “she’s already a has-been” and such if it didn’t sell well, but honestly I feel bad about making you my fans use your money for it. I wanna say you don’t have to buy that “best” if you already have other works in the name of Utada.

Record companies are “companies” intended to gain profits even though they deal with “music.” I understand that point very well, and I am a type of person who listens to them should their business in tough situation. I could support the release of these “best” type of material if it could be made as something worthwhile for all fans, the record company and me through mutual discussion.

The release of “Utada the best” by Universal this time is, in my view, a very sad decision.

They could put off the date, or think up the way of release to make my fans happy by making the contents better and such . . . I desperately encouraged them but it brought us nowhere so far.

The release is solely decided by their management level, so I have no hard feelngs toward the staff people of Universal. My comments might be troubling the people in charge of promoting. I am sorry for that.

I thank you my fans for reading this complicated story!

The mark of Utada Hikaru-approved “〜Single collection Vol.2″ is “the picture of universe”!

Utada Concert in Japan

upcoming 2 date concert series are well under way. A stage mock-up was created a few weeks back, and other concrete plans have begun. This will be the first time that Utada herself will produce a live show, with Mr. Utada assisting as co-producer. Their aim is to create a “warm” show, so don’t expect the high-tech visuals of the Kiriya Kazuaki produced Utada United 2006  Tour
